Multimedia resources

In addition to photos, I also have some great video clips, audio and other media from South Africa. I've selected some of them to share with you. You are welcome to download media from this page for your personal use.

audio (mp3)
ESANGWENI SCHOOL CHOIR - Shosholoza (Lyrics here) 2,79 MB A famous South African song, performed by the Esangweni school choir. It's a professional recording from 2000. I have more great songs performed by the Esangweni choir, including the ones recorded during my stay. If you are interested to hear more, contact me.
ESANGWENI SCHOOL CHOIR - Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika (Lyrics here) 1,29 MB The national anthem of South Africa, Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika (God Bless Africa). Read more about the South African national anthem here.
SIZWE - Makhuzwa 4,41 MB Kwaito music performed by my friend Sizwe - he wrote the song himself.
MIRIAM MAKEBA - The Click Song (Lyrics here) 2,87 MB The famous Click Song. Listen to the sounds in the Xhosa language.
English-Afrikaans-Xhosa audio lesson for beginners 8,84 MB Listen to words and phrases in Afrikaans and Xhosa and learn some basic greetings in these languages. :)
video clips (wmv)
A sentence in the Xhosa language 2,32 MB Listen and watch my friend Thandile saying a sentence in his native Xhosa language. That sentence is a special tongue-twister, normally there are not so many clicks in one sentence! This is something I did not even try to imitate! Im not exactly sure what this sentence means, but I know its something about a squirrel, which is iqaqa in Xhosa. This video clip has become the favourite of many people to whom Ive shown it!
Children dancing 5,06 MB Children dancing on the street in Khayelitsha. African children are great at dancing - they pick it up at an early age. The children on this video clip had practiced though.
12th graders splashing each other with paint
600 KB In Estonian high schools, the graduates splash each other with water in spring. I was surprised to encounter the same tradition in South Africa (at least in the Esangweni School!) - however, in addition to water, they also use PAINT! ;o)
Audience at a community event 7,16 MB South African audiences are full of life and energy. On this video clip people are cheering at a local choir festival. This is what I miss in Europe!

Postcards from South Africa 508 KB While looking through the stuff I brought from South Africa, I came across some postcards which I had bought there and I thought Id share them with you. Ive made a kind of collage out of them, you can use it as your desktop image if you like, the size is 1280 x 1024 pixels.
Seashells 667 KB The seashells I picked from South Africa. I had never seen such beautiful and big seashells before and I just loved looking for them. Actually, I didnt even have to look for them, seashells were abundant in the beaches - it was just a matter of selecting the ones which I liked best. You can use this picture as your desktop image if you wish, the size is 1280 x 1024 pixels.
SIZWE - Life is too short 1,11 MB In addition to being a talented singer and dancer, Sizwe is also creating impressive cartoons. This drawing is about HIV/AIDS affecting the lives of young people.
SIZWE - The struggle continues 1,19 MB Another drawing by Sizwe - again, about the struggle against HIV/AIDS.
text documents (pdf)
Icebo Elililo (a Xhosa poem) (jpg) 104 KB A poem I scanned from a Xhosa poetry book. I tried to read it (if you know the pronunciation rules, its not that difficult). Anyway, my Xhosa friends were quite amused when hearing it! ;o) This poem is not so difficult to read, because it doesnt contain the click sounds! The poem sounds really nice when read by a native Xhosa speaker. Here I want to thank Thandile, Mandisi and Khanyiso for teaching me Xhosa!
