Follow-up activities Since my return from South Africa in November 2005, I've been involved in numerous follow-up activities introducing my project in South Africa and talking about global development issues more generally. An overview of these activities is given below. photo exhibition From January 3-16, 2006 my photo exhibition, titled "The contrasts of South Africa: Life in Khayelitsha" was first displayed in the National Library of Estonia and following that, in 4 Estonian schools. The exhibition concentrated on my project and my experiences in Khayelitsha, since this is something quite unique which people in Estonia don't encounter every day, while any tourist can go to South Africa and take photos of the popular sights and the beautiful nature not even knowing about life in the townships. For more information about the exhibition and to see the previews of the photos, go to the Photo exhibition page. tv & radio interviews Some TV and radio stations have showed interest in my project in SA and about GLEN in general. • On Wednesday, February 8, 2005 I appreared as a guest in the morning show "Terevisioon" on ETV together with Andres, a GLEN participant in 2004 (his project was in Ghana) and Ester, the Estonian GLEN co-ordinator at that time. We talked a bit about our project experiences and about GLEN in general. • Two interviews to Raadio 2. The first of these was a short one in the morning show where I spoke together with another GLEN participant and our GLEN co-ordinator. The second interview was longer - I spoke about my project and my experiences in South Africa. The interview was about 10 minutes long (of course, 10 minutes is not enough to speak about the experiences of 4 months) and it was on air the following day, December 17th in the youth programme VERSUS. You can listen to the interview from the website of Raadio 2 here (the first file - "Versus 18. detsember 2005". The interview is in the second part of the show). The interview is in Estonian. • I gave another 10 minute interview to Raadio Kuku on January 3, 2006. I've given 3 interviews to newspapers about my project in South Africa. The first article was published on January 14, 2006 in Eesti Päevaleht, a major Estonian daily newspaper. Unfortunately, the article was shortened quite a bit to fit on the page and it has only one photo. Due to the shortening, quite a lot of relevant information is left out and therefore, some things seem a bit out of context, therefore the overall impression is not that accurate. Also, the style of the article is not so good - it is more like a sequence of facts, opinions and emotions are left out. If you want to read the article, please choose a version from below: • the article in the online version of Eesti Päevaleht (in Estonian) The second article was published in the newspaper Õpetajate Leht (Teachers' Newspaper) in the issue of January 20, 2006. This is longer and I like it much better than the previous one, since it conveys a much more accurate image of my stay and my experiences. To read the article, please choose one of the versions below: • the article in the online version of Õpetajate Leht (in Estonian) The latest article was published in the newspaper "Üliõpilasleht" (Student Newspaper) in the issue of February 6, 2006. The article speaks about GLEN and development co-operation. The photo in the article was chosen by the newspaper staff. My answers were shortened quite a bit. To read the article, please choose one of the versions below: • the article as it appears in the paper (photo) (in Estonian) While reading these articles in the newspapers, some thoughts occurred to me. Initially planned to include them as comments to this page, but as I started writing, more and more ideas occurred to me until finally the text became too long for this page, therefore I've made it available on the Impressions page. * * *The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has included 2 photos from my project in their Development Co-operation photo gallery. Click here to see the photos. presentations • I gave the first presentation in the National Library of Estonia, shortly after my return from SA, the audience were mostly my colleagues. • Together with other Estonian GLEN participants, I spoke at a GLEN information day. • On January 31, 2006, I was invited to speak at a high school in Tallinn. The school was having an event intoducing English-speaking countries such as Kenya and South Africa. I enojoyed speaking about my experiences. There were quite a lot of people listening, I think the whole high school was there. I also showed them a couple of video clips, among them the one with Thandile saying a sentence in Xhosa. They really loved that one ;o) • On February 2, 2006 I gave a presentation at a secondary school in Tallinn, to a 9th grade. • On February 3, 2006, I spoke to a club of retired people, gathering in a library in Tallinn. They showed great interest in my project and my stay, I've never been asked so many questions by any audience! ;o) • On February 8, 2006 I spoke about my experiences to a club of retired teachers. glen renew seminar 2006 From March 29 to April 2, the GLEN 2006 RENew seminar took place near Berlin, Germany. It was wonderful to meet with the other Glennies again and to share our impressions and experiences. I got lots of positive emotions and energy from that meeting and I hope it will last long! co-ordination of glen in estonia from May 2006 to September 2006, I was the co-ordinator of GLEN in Estonia. Unfortunately I had to quit this job because of my studies in Budapest. resource person at GLEN 2007 seminarIn April 2007, I visited the first GLEN preparation seminar in Werftpfuhl as a resource person for the tandems going to South Africa.
